Category: Lawn Mover

Keeping a well cut lawn is important to maintaining your home, but not everyone has acres of yard to keep mowed. While looking for the perfect mower for someone with a lawn on the smaller side I came across the Sun Joe MJ401E Mow Joe. The manufacturer say it was developed as an easy to use solution for for those with smaller yards. It looked like it would fit the role perfectly so I did my research and this review is what I found.

Small for Easy Storage

Tending a small lawn presents some unique challenges. First if your yard is small, you are probably limited as to storage space, too. The Mow Joe is designed compactly to store in as small an area as possible. Additionally, since it is electric, you don’t have to worry about storing smelly and potentially dangerous gasoline or oil for your lawn maintenance needs.

Quiet for Peace with the Neighbors

Another challenge of a small yard is that it usually means your neighbors’ houses are very close. This can be an issue when the time you have to take care of your lawn doesn’t match up to the time they won’t mind the commotion. The Mow Joe is described in reviews as sounding like a fan when operating. This means you can do your lawn care whenever you like, even mowing that strip right under your neighbor’s bedroom window without disturbing their sleep.

Save by Foregoing Features You Don’t Need

Since your yard is small, there is no reason to spend the huge premium for a cordless model. A 100 foot extension cord (don’t get a cheap 16 AWG cord, more on this later) will easily reach to all corners of your property. Also, mowing will be easier without the extra weight and bulk of a battery, allowing you to maneuver into all the tight nooks and crannies with ease. This will leave you with less to clean up with a weed trimmer which is always a good thing in my book.

Features and Specifications

  • 12 amp motor gives you the power to make short work (no pun intended) of the toughest lawns quickly and easily
  • Starts with the push of a button, no more yanking on a starter cord until your shoulder and back scream for mercy
  • Electric power means instead of storing cans of gasoline to spill and make everything stink, you only have an extension cord to wind and hang up
  • Can adjust the height to one of three positions between two inches and 2½ inches so you can get just the manicured look you desire
  • Designed to be compact to allow easier maneuverability and to store in less space
  • Has a built in grass catcher that removes easily to make clean up a breeze
  • Warrantied for two years to give you that extra peace of mind that you will get years of service for your investment

Customer Reviews

While researching the Sun Joe MJ401E Moe Joe, I found over 400 customer reviews. These reviews averaged just over 4 out of 5 stars. This is because over half the customers rated it with a perfect five stars and over ¾ of the customers rated it with four or five stars.

The biggest positive that came up in review after review is the small size. This made it a perfect choice for older people or people with health problems that limited their ability to lug around a larger mower. It also enabled the Moe Joe to be used in places where if you used a larger mower you would have to get with a trimmer.

Another reason the Moe Joe is a great choice for people with limited ability is the fact that there is no starter cord. People with shoulder, neck, of back problems often find pull starters difficult or painful to manipulate. Now they can start their mower with by pushing in the safety button and pulling the start lever back to the handle.

You will no longer have to lug or store jugs of gasoline for your lawn maintenance. This gets rid of the smell and the danger of storing gas at you home or the inconvenience of having to go buy gas when you want to cut your grass. Your energy requirements are all served through an extension cord.

Having an electric mower reduces the maintenance necessary, too. You will no longer have to change the oil. You also no longer have to get it tuned up before the spring mowing season begins. When the time comes for your first mow of the year, you just pull it out, dust it off, plug it in, and mow.

One problem that I saw come up a few times in the reviews is that the wheels could break off. As I researched this, because it would be a major issue if true, I found that the problem seemed to be caused by sliding the mower from side to side. The wheels are not as tough as those on your old all metal gas mower and this must be respected. As long as you use your mower as designed and roll it forward and backward without sliding it to the side, this should not be a problem.

The much more serious concern I found was people saying the motor burned out and quit working. By digging a little deeper I learned that the likely cause of this was using the wrong extension cord. This belief was reinforced when I looked up the mower an Amazon and saw that they were recommending as an add on purchase a 16 AWG 100 foot extension cord. The manufacturer says that this mower requires at least a 14 AWG cord (in AWG a lower number indicates a larger wire). The motor is rated at 12 amps and the smaller 16 AWG wire just isn’t big enough to supply the proper amount of electricity. This makes the motor operate outside of its design causing premature failure. So long story short, if you buy a proper 12 or 14 AWG extension cord, this should not be an issue for you.

While two large problems were found in the reviews for this product, they both are caused by trying to use it outside of what it was designed for. Given that and the overall positive reviews, I can confidently recommend the Sun Joe MJ401E Moe Joe as a fine mower for people with small yards and little storage space. Just do me a favor and buy a properly size extension cord to go with it so you will get years of service out of it.

Keeping a neatly cut lawn is important to every homeowner to keep peace with both your spouse and the neighbors. The WORX WG789 Lawn Mower seemed to be a highly regarded cordless mower. Since I am always looking for tools to make my yard work easier, I decided to do some research on it and share what I discovered in this review.

Power to Spare

It is important for a cordless mower to have the battery life to allow you to get the job done. It’s battery is rated to cut 12,500 square feet on a single charge. That means you can go out and mow nearly a third of an acre without recharging. If your yard is larger than that, you may be interested in buying a second battery as the battery is removable and is recharged separate from the mower.

The Quiet Life

Electric mowers have a definite advantage when it comes to noise and  is top notch in this regard. Do you hate getting out in the summer heat of midday to do your yard work? With the WORX WG789 Cordless mower you can get out and mow in the cool of early morning without having to worry about disturbing the neighbors.

Features and Specifications

  • Cordless to allow you to reach any area of your yard without being tethered to your house by extension cords
  • 36-volt battery gives you the power to cut through the tough stuff (if you are like me and “miss” a week of mowing)
  • Removable battery gives you the option of keeping a second battery on hand for larger yards
  • Self-propelled with PaceSetter system to match your pace so the mower pulls itself along at the speed you want to go
  • Extra torque with IntelliCut so you don’t get bogged down or worse, leave uncut patches in your yard when you’re cutting tough grass
  • 45 minute battery run-time (12,500 square feet) which is plenty of time to do a decent sized yard in one charge
  • 19-inch width so it may take more passes if you are used to the 20-inch to 22-inch widths common to gas mowers but difference is negligible
  • Adjustable height to cut from 1.5 to 3.5 inches to allow you to get exactly the cut you want in your yard
  • Mower backed by a 2 year warranty, battery by a 1 year warranty

Customer Reviews

While researching the WORX WG789 Lawn Mower I found nearly 100 customer reviews. The reviews averaged 4 out of 5 stars. That means most buyers rated it with the highest marks available.

The reviews showed several trends. Many reviewers described the WORX WG789 as a well built machine. They said it is constructed with solid materials,well-fitted together. Another positive often mentioned is that the battery life definitely delivers on the promise made by the manufacturer. People mentioned over and over again that they were able to do their whole yard and have charge left over.

Also mentioned as a positive is the options open to you. You can set it to mulch the grass clippings as you go to help thicken your lawn. You can set it to discharge out the side to make it easy to rake up later. Or my personal favorite is to use the bagger to make clean up automatic.

If your old mower is like all the ones I have owned, adjusting the cutting height means adjusting each wheel separately. It has a one touch height adjuster so no more counting notches to make sure all your wheels are at the same height.

A big pro for this mower is not having to deal with buying, storing, spilling, cleaning up, and smelling (and smelling LIKE) gasoline ever again. Your mowing will be much more pleasant without the aggravation of checking and changing oil. You will never again wrench your shoulder yanking on a starter cord.

While there were some complaints about the PaceSetter system, the overall impression seems to be that it works very well once you learn its quirks and get used to operating it. The PaceSetter system controls the drive for the self-propelled mechanism. It varies the speed of the mower to your walking speed. Once you get used to the system, it maximizes the comfort for you as you don’t have to strain to push the mower or run to try to keep up with it.

There were also several complaints about the battery life. These complaints fell into two general categories. The first group seems to expect the battery to last longer than the manufacturer claims. This is not a fair expectation. The second group complained that the battery lost charge holding ability over time. My research showed that this problem is probably due to maintenance issues. The WORX WG789  uses a lead acid battery like the ones used in cars. These batteries work best and last longest if kept fully charged as much as possible. People have gotten used to lithium ion batteries that last better if completely or near completely discharged before recharging. Completely discharging lead acid batteries will quickly degrade its ability to hold a charge.   If your yard is too large to finish with charge left, you will have the best experience if you recharge at the halfway point.

While there are some complaints, the overall consensus is that the WORX WG789 Mower is a great choice in the cordless electric lawn mower market. If you are interested in not having to ever mess with gasoline and oil again, not spewing pollutants into the air, and not needing earplugs to mow your lawn, the WORX WG789 19-Inch 36 Volt Cordless PaceSetter Self Propelled 3-In-1 Lawn Mower is an excellent choice that with a bit of learning and proper battery maintenance should give you years of pleasant mowing experience.

Spring is coming and that means: yard waste. Whether it’s leftover yard waste from the fall before if you didn’t clear it all up or yard waste from over the winter, dead branches, dead leaves and dead grass abound, making for ugly yards and even uglier clean-up tasks. Everyone with a yard has to deal with their yard’s waste at some point. It’s not fun and it’s much easier to simply throw it away, burn it or pitch it into a hidden corner somewhere! However, if you do that, you’re also throwing away a valuable resource: mulch.

Mulch is very important for the health of a lawn, garden or flower garden. Mulch brings important vitamins and nutrients back to the soil and it helps to aerate your lawn and garden. Organic mulch is the absolutely best kind as you don’t have to worry about chemicals and other junk clogging up your yard and creating less than perfect greenery and tasty foodstuff. However, you may have avoided buying it in the past simply because mulch can be rather expensive. But you don’t have to go to the local hardware store or grocery store to get it: you have the stuff to make mulch right now with all that yard waste: you just need a good chipper/shredder to handle it.

The LawnMaster FD1501

The LawnMaster FD1501 is considered to be a great chipper/shredder with good value for the money. It’s able to handle a wide array of yard waste, from twigs and sticks to mowed grass and has a great conversion ratio: 10 parts in to 1 part out, meaning you can turn even the biggest mess into a compact, easy to use bag of mulch to help your gardens and lawn grow in a healthy fashion. At least, that’s what the product advertisements claim! If you’re looking for a chipper/shredder for your yard work, is the LawnMaster FD1501 really the master of the terrain?

What the LawnMaster FD1501 Has to Offer

This particular chipper/shredder is something of a compact shredder. It’s very portable at about 29 pounds in weight and has 8-inch wheels, making it easy to move around. It has a load capacity of 15.85 bushels and runs off electricity with a 15 amp motor. With a good extension cord, you can easily move this device all over the lawn and get the yard waste you need to mulch. The two-sided blade is easy to change when it gets dull and you get a collection bag to hold your mulch. It has a cutting diameter of 1.5” and a 10:1 mulch ratio, meaning that you can get rid of a lot of yard waste at once!

From a practical point of view, the LawnMaster FD1501 is great for small to medium size yards. It can easily handle things like trimmed trees, mown grass, garden waste and weeds; however, if you have a large yard and lot of waste and you don’t have a good extension cord, you may end up doing quite a bit of running around.

Pros and Cons

The LawnMaster FD1501 is considered to be one of the best chipper/shredders around in terms of value for money and here’s why:

  • It’s powerful enough to handle most mundane sort of yard waste with ease: twigs, grass, leaves and more. The steel blade is nice and wide and it can handle an array of waste without worrying about jamming up the machine.
  • The dual blades are reversible so you can easily turn your waste into mulch even if things aren’t loaded in quite right in the first place.
  • It has great safety features such as a removable hopper access panel, an auto-shut off switch for changing the blades and a cord retainer so you’re not tripping over anything. These are always worth having if you’re working with sharp blades!
  • It’s very portable, meaning it’s easy to carry around your yard and you can even carry it off to help other people! Anything which helps with the spring clean-up is always a good thing.
  • The device comes has an extension cord length maximum of 100 feet. When this is combined with its portability, it means you can use it on even very large yards without having to shove it around too much and wasting your time.
  • It has overload motor protection
  • It comes with a push stick so that you can shove your waste into the shredder with ease
  • It’s very affordable: about $152.00 for everything from most places, including Amazon and Sears.

All of these features make it an ideal shredder/chipper for most average size lawns and for most regular users. It’s easy to learn, works well and can turn your waste into gorgeous mulch.

It’s not a perfect device though and it does shoulder its share of complaints. The main complaint is that it has a narrow slot for loading waste. The slot may be too narrow to handle some kinds of clippings or branches; you’ll have to trim them down still further before pushing them into the slot. On the reverse side, the machine can have trouble with finer twigs, so you may have to pull them out of the mulch and chip them repeatedly. Otherwise, this device has very little that is wrong with it and many things that more than make up for these few complaints.

So is It Worth Buying?

The LawnMaster FD1501 is certainly worth buying in our opinions. It is absolutely clean to use as it doesn’t use oil or gas and it’s fairly efficient. It’s also very affordable and comes with a solid warranty so that if something does go wrong, you can get help. It’s able to handle an array of yard waste and it’s portable enough to go wherever you need to go. All in all, it’s a great machine and just what you need if you’re staring down the barrel of a spring clean-up in the wake of winter or an autumn clean-up to get ready for winter. Don’t just leave your yard waste lying around: mulch it and recycle it for the next generation of fantastic greenery!

Is there a more quintessential chore for the summer than mowing the lawn? It’s the way that pre-teens and teenagers can make some money, college students do it as part of the summer job and it’s always featured large in many sit-coms with husbands! Mowing the lawn is something which has just become a core experience for anyone with a lawn and it can even be made into a point of pride: look how nice and neat my grass is!

Of course, mowing the lawn can also be a real pain. Lawnmowers can be very costly (or very cheap in construction meaning they don’t work correctly), they can create a big mess, they can be too heavy to use very efficiently and they can be absolutely ruinous on the atmosphere. Many lawnmowers have problems with a variety of grasses and bumpy lawns (after all,  not everyone has a smooth, clear yard!) A cheap lawnmower makes more of a mess than it solves and an expensive one is out of reach for many homeowners and renters. A noisy one will annoy the neighbors and quiet ones are fairly rare. So what’s the proud owner/renter of a home and yard to do? Find a lawnmower that isn’t overprice, isn’t too noisy, won’t make a mess and will work when it’s supposed to work without a big fuss!

Does this sound impossible? It doesn’t have to be and while we cannot offer the perfect lawnmower, we do have one that is very close:

The Lawn-Boy 17732 CARB Compliant Kohler Lawn Mower

The Lawn-Boy 17732 CARB Compliant Kohler lawn mower is a walk behind, gas powered lawn mower (phew!) It offers a number of features that make it easy for homeowners to use and it’s affordable enough that most households should be able to purchase it and sturdy enough to make it worth the price tag. This particular lawn mower is really good for a wide variety of lawns owing to its design and drive system and it offers fairly clean use as it simply uses gas. It also offers a great Tru-Start Commitment and good options for use. Or so the advertisements claim! So what can you expect from the Lawn-Boy 17732 if you decide this is the lawn mower for you?

Features of the Lawn-Boy 17732 Mower

The Lawn-Boy 17732 mower is a lot more than simply a walk behind mower! It is a gas powered mower meaning that you get a good motor to chop down even sturdy lawns. The motor is a 6.5 gross torque overhead valve engine which is powerful enough to handle the strongest of grasses. But if you have a strangely growing lawn, this system features a 2 point Height of Cut system. What this does is let you adjust cutting heights from one side of the mower so you can adjust the length of the grass growing on your lawn to suit your preferences.

The design of the Lawn-Boy 17732 is well thought out as well. It’s heavy, but not too heavy at less than seventy pounds. It has large wheels which makes the system more maneuverable. And it’s very easy to put together: you simply unpack it, attach the handle, add the oil (comes with the device), add the gas (does not come with the device) and you can go! It also comes with a bag to store your grass.

The Lawn-Boy 17732 also has rear wheel drive. This is handy if your lawn is hilly or goes downhill because it gives you great traction and control. No run-away or stuck lawn mowers here! Furthermore, this device has a 3 in 1 discharge: you can mulch your grass, bag it or simply release it out the side to break down itself over time. With a 21 inch steel blade, you can cut right through the grass and with the 3-in-1 system, you can really decide what you want to do with it after. The blade is able to handle thick, wet and weedy lawns with ease.

Finally, the Lawn-Boy guarantees its start: if the mower doesn’t start with one or two pulls of the string, Lawn-Boy will fix it, absolutely for free for three years after the purchase date. That’s a pretty good guarantee that the machine will work consistently for a long period of time!

This lawn mower is also CARB Compliant for the state of California. This means that it complies with air standard qualities and has minimal pollution, something which will let everyone breathe a sigh of relief! Having a CARB compliant lawnmower is not only good for the environment, but it can also be something of a point of pride and a good way to show your commitment to clean air.

Problems with the Lawn-Boy 17732

It might be a bit heavy for some people, particularly seniors, at around 66 pounds in weight. For most people though, this is still pretty easy to handle. There are no real bells or whistles attached to this lawn-mower; it’s not self-propelled for example and it doesn’t have other bits and pieces to it, so if you’re looking for something very gadgety for your lawn, this won’t be it.

Otherwise, this device has very few problems with it and at less than $300.00 with a three year commitment to start properly, this device is great value for the money. It’s ideal for small to medium size lawns with any type of grass you can imagine. It gives you great options for grass cutting sizes and you can do things like mulch it, bag it or simply let it go back onto your lawn to break down naturally. And at the cost, combined with the Tru-Start Commitment, it’s ideal for people who are looking for something that will last a while and won’t break the bank. It’s particularly perfect for people who just need something to cut the grass and don’t need it to do much more than that! If any of this sound like you, then the Lawn-Boy 17732 mower should be just right for you. Enjoy!

Fall clean-up before the winter hits is never a very fun chore and you’re always left with a big pile of miscellaneous leaves, twigs, small branches and dead grass to deal with! While many people simply bag it and toss it, there is a better solution: shred it and mulch it!

Mulching the gardens and lawns before winter hits is a good way to ensure a healthy lawn and garden once spring comes back to town. The mulch gives the soil new nutrients and vitamins while keeping your plants like berry plants warm and safe all winter. Mulch also helps bring oxygen to the soil which is also an important part of the system. If you want healthy grass and grounds, then you want to add some good organic mulch and get rid of the old clutter while you’re at it. How can you do it? With the Eco-Shredder ES1600.

What is the Eco-Shredder ES1600?

The Eco-Shredder ES1600 is just that: an economical shredder that allows you to do easy clean-up of the yard when you’re done with light chores like raking and trimming the bushes. This device is best used for things like small twigs and small branches, leaves and cut grass rather than anything too tough or large. Featuring usability straight out of the box (basically) and of course the ability to turn yard waste into great mulch combined with an affordable price tag, the Eco-Shredder ES1600 may be just what you’re looking for in terms of great yard clean up. Learn more here!

Features of the Eco-Shredder ES1600

The Eco-Shredder ES1600 has a number of sturdy features which help you do your yard work efficiently. Primarily of course, this device is a shredder. It offers a triple cycle shredding system which gives you very consistent mulch at a ratio of 10:1 (10 units of waste equals 1 unit of mulch). The top of the device is ?bucket’ shaped, allowing you to easily load any size and shape of waste. The discharge chute is also rounded, making it easy to get the mulch back out again. The feeder is a three way feed so you can quickly load up the shredder and go.

The machine is also portable and quiet. It is an electrical shredder meaning that you don’t have to worry about causing noise and smell for the neighbors. It has seven inch wheels to make it very easy to roll the device around and it only weighs in at about sixty-three pounds, so you can even wheel it around to other places if you want to give someone a helping hand! It has replaceable blades so that you can change them up whenever you need to and plenty of safety features to keep you from getting into trouble. These include an overload protection switch and a flap over the chute to prevent things from flying around.

The blade itself is very good at shredding things like twigs and grass. It has a V-type blade which turns at up to 2800 RPM and you get replacement blades when you first buy the device. When combined with the 14 AMP, 2.5 HP motor, you get a shredder which can handle any sort of basic yard waste.

Benefits of the Eco-Shredder ES1600

The Eco-Shredder ES1600 has a number of benefits. It has easy assembly (about 15 minutes) and it is safe to use. It comes with a set of replacement blades and the tools you’ll need to actually install those blades. It’s very quiet as it’s electrically powered rather than gas powered and that means you can respect your neighbors and your ears! It’s also portable and it’s small enough to store just about anywhere, though its weight is surprising considering how portable it is! And finally, it’s easy to put together and can practically be used right out of the box.

The important thing though is that it can handle a variety of yard materials. It’s best used on things like twigs, small branches, grass and leaves and reduces these things to mulch or small chips. It can go through brush easily too.

The price tag isn’t bad for this device; less than $270.00 for the whole thing. This is a little more expensive than other shredders, but it does come with replacement bits and tools, so it’s worthwhile for those who regularly need something like this for their yard work.

Problems with the Eco-Shredder ES1600

It’s a far from perfect device however. Like many shredders, large branches will require some ?pre-processing’ in order to go through the system. It cannot handle wet materials at all well, like many shredders, and you must ensure that you unclog the device (or let it unclog itself) before using it again or else you could jam up the machine! Finally, the blades have to be sharpened regularly. You may want to do after every use, but you don’t need to; after every few uses is best. Another thing to watch for is that it can be ?tipped’ easily if it’s placed on very uneven ground. It’s relatively lightweight, so if you keep trying to put it bumpy, hilly ground, it may tip over on you.

Don’t expect the Eco-Shredder ES1600 to do much more than mulch and shred things; it does as advertised with no bells or whistles to add more to it. It has enough power to do what it needs to do, it handles standard yard waste, and it is easy to put together and use and then put away again.

The Eco-Shredder ES1600 does what it needs to do and do so admirably. It’s compact, easy to wheel around and can handle most standard yard waste with ease. It has good safety features, it’s affordable and it comes with replacement blades and tools for when you need to do some maintenance on it. While it’s not chock full of adjustable bits and bells and whistles, it does what it does and does it well which is precisely what one would expect from an affordable chipper/shredder. So get your work gloves on and get rid of the late winter/early spring waste with this Eco-Shredder ES1600. Enjoy!
